The Beach is a gallery for art and poetry founded by Sophie Appel and Hannah Tishkoff in downtown Los Angeles's Fashion District.

Though we met only a few years ago, we soon found out that our connection had begun before we had a say in it — when our grandparents, as newlyweds in the 1950s, were friends. In the spirit of accidental and collaborative kinds of artistic lineages Los Angeles produces: passed between people rather than institutions, we somehow had always been having one long phone call. We share Los Angeles' particular kind of psychic weather.

Both of us have spent the last few years finding and creating places where people can physically go while the world feels increasingly lonely and atomized. Places where language, image, music, performance all exist together because life exists together.

The Beach exists because we want to be together with you all, we want more and greater forms of togetherness, the kind that feels porous and lived-in.
